  • I Reckon

This Gnarls Barkley cover of Radiohead’s “Reckoner” totally manages to make up for the fact that I didn’t really care for “The Odd Couple”.

  • Julia Nunes

For whatever reason, I’ve really been into Julia Nunes lately.  Crystal introduced me to her mostly Uke oriented covers on YouTube a few months back and she ping ponged around in my brain until a week ago.  While she does some solid originals, the standout tracks — for me at least — are her covers.

Since she doesn’t have any backup singers, she actually records herself singing vocal harmonies where necessary and cuts the videos together to achieve the desired effect.  It’s pretty clever and makes me smile a whole bunch — so I’m hopeful that you’ll enjoy it too.

  • Macbook Air vs. Girl Talk

As far as I’m concerned, this video is absolute genius.  Of course, I might be a bit partial due to the fact that I’m totally in love with the new Girl Talk album — but that’s really beside the point.

  • Motivation

“Everybody keeps on talking about it, nobody’s getting it done.”

    LCD Soundsystem, “Yeah (Crass Version)

*sigh* I hate being one of those new age douchebags that talk about personal mantras — but I still feel compelled to share this.

I have to confess that every time I find myself hitting a brick wall mentally or I start lacking any sort of motivation, the line above manages to find its way into my head — and always at the right time.

And as cheesy as this might end up sounding, whipping out my iPod and giving the track a quick listen actually ends up pushing me forward.  At that very second I want to be the person who stops letting the talk and bullshit cloud my mind and instead be the one who starts doing.

So that’s what I do.  Well, for the most part anyway.  I mean, it can never really be that simple, can it?

Still, I’ve realized the strength of this song.  “Yeah” is my auditory can of spinach.  It works really well at giving me short bursts of awesome, and that’s totally fine by me.

So what kicks your ass into high gear?  Enquiring minds want to know.

  • The Last 5 Songs I Bought On iTunes

One of the reasons I love iTunes is because it lets my sometimes questionable and eclectic music tastes be sated with a small handful of button pushes. Yeah, the DRM is a janky pile of shit — as all DRM is — but being able to scratch an itch right away is worth a buck or so to me.

So in the interest of both show and tell time and internet memes, I’m going to start something up. It might not make it any further than the bits and bytes being transferred here — but I’d like to think my few friends who I’m going to ping to do this will humor me at the very least. Who knows, maybe it’ll spread… *shrug*

So without further adieu, here are the last 5 songs I bought from iTunes:

    1. Dio – Holy Diver
    2. The Doors – Riders On The Storm
    3. Frank Black – Los Angeles
    4. Ol Dirty Bastard – Shimmy Shimmy Ya
    5. The Jesus And Mary Chain – Sometimes Always

And the 5 people I’m tagging for this (so long as they actually use iTunes to buy shit, that is) are:

    1. Sean Bonner (Response)
    2. Andre Torrez
    3. Tom Bridge
    4. Matt Haughey
    5. Crystal Williams

Optimally, these people will do it and tag 5 other folks and the chain will continue. But if they don’t, whatever. I’m not going to be a hardass about it or anything.

Update: If you don’t “do” the iTMS, listing purchases from eMusic, Amazon’s new mp3 service, Bleep, or even the last few CDs you bought is totally fine by me. The emphasis is on sharing what’s been buzzing thru your skull so much that you had to get it is the point here.

  • Where Is My Mind?

I know Surfer Rosa is supposed to be iconic and amongst the best rock albums of all time — but as time goes on, I’m finding that I like Doolittle way more.

If you’re looking for something deep, there’s no point other than the one above. I guess I’m just sayin’, that’s all…

  • Hotel Yorba… On A Bus

Despite the fact that a few members of the audience get on my nerves a bit — shouty guy, I’m looking at you — here’s a great bit of footage from The White Stripes recent performance on a Winnipeg City Bus. Despite its shortcomings, it’s definitely worth sharing.

  • Shall We Play A Game?

I’m running up on the Yay Area at the end of the month to see LCD Soundsystem — as well as a few friends — and I’d really like to put my name in the hat for a round of Faceball if at all possible. My inner masochist thinks it’d be worth making the trip to Flickr HQ for.

So what do you say, Flickrdoodles?

  • Gimme Some Ear Candy

At first, I had a real hard time shelling out $9.99 for for 15 minutes worth of content — but now that I’ve done so, I’m really glad I picked up Ze Frank‘s The Songs from iTunes. It’s a collection of 21 Ze classics such as Where The Fuck Do Ideas Come From? and Anti-intellectualism in much better quality than the versions I ripped for myself from the original videos.

So if you’re a fan, get to buying this. If you aren’t, don’t. And if you don’t know what I’m going on about, go watch The Show. Seriously, you’ll thank me later.

  • Apple And EMI Drop DRM

The best part (to me at least) about Apple and EMI’s DRM free deal is the news that full album prices are still going to stay the same. That is to say that the price will remain around the $9.99 mark — but your purchase will apparently net you the DRM free 256 kbps AAC versions of the tracks.

Now I don’t know about you, but that gives me loads more incentive to start buying full albums thru iTunes. Well, you know, so long as I like most of the tracks on an album. That’s still going to be a big deal for me. Still, this whole announcement is a step in the right direction for online music.
