  • Feed Swapping

Realizing that I really don’t give that much of a shit about what Lindsay Lohan/Jeremy Piven/Paris Hilton/Andy Dick is up to now, I’ve dropped my old guilty pleasure Defamer from my feed reader and replaced it with Gawker’s new music blog Idolator.

After reading their manifesto it seems like a pretty fair trade to me.

  • Oh, It’s Nothing Special

Ben Gibbard + Colin Meloy + Blur’s “End of a Century” = Awesome!

I just wish the quality of the audio was better…

  • Pitchfork Friendly Band Names, Part Tres

Next time you want to out cool your one friend who brags about downloading the Gnarls Barkley album “months before it was released here in the U.S.”, try dropping any of these fake band names into a conversation:

    • The Iron-On Letters
    • Scotland Yard
    • Cancer Omega
    • Kerouac
    • Burst Into Flames

Oh, they’re good — but have you heard The Iron-On Letters? Fucking transcendent. I saw them open for Colin Meloy when he was doing his solo Morrissey acoustic thing a while back. I’m pretty sure they’ve got a MySpace.

I guarantee it’ll work almost every time… Well, at least until your friend Googles whatever band you name check and finds this post. *shrug*

    More: Part 1. Part 2.

  • I Don’t Wanna, I Don’t Think So

I don’t know what’s worse — the fact that T-Mobile offers Sonic Youth’s “Kool Thing” as a ringtone or the fact that I’m actually considering purchasing it.

  • She Took The Midnight Train Goin’ Anywhere

What sort of karaoke joint manages to have stuff by Journey without having “Don’t Stop Believing” or “Separate Ways” in their book of available songs?

Despite having a fantastic time drinking and partying with my awesome new coworkers at City Cat Karaoke Studio last night, that one thing still sort of bugs me this afternoon. *sigh* Oh well.

  • Mash Ups Go Mainstream

Maybe it’s just me, but did anyone else find it a bit weird to hear Go Home Productions “Rapture Riders” on Alias tonight?

I know it’s on Blondie’s “Sound and Vision” and everything, but I remember when I downloaded that track off his website well over a year ago. It’s just sort of a trip for me to hear a mash up that I’ve listened to a whole bunch on a TV show I used to watch obsessively.

What’s next, Party Ben‘s “Boulevard of Broken Songs” making an appearance on Gilmore Girls?

P.S. Unlike Sean, I was happy that the bomb in Will’s brain didn’t go off.

  • Under The Covers

While it was already one of my favorite Velvet Underground songs, I’ve recently become addicted to Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs blissfully wonderful take on “Sunday Morning”.

I’d offer it up for download, but it looks like they’ve posted it up on the MySpace page for Sid n’ Susie. I suggest you go give it a spin while you can. Well, maybe not a spin exactly — but you get the drift, right?

P.S. Yes, I’m aware Sandy Duncan’s Eye was a band in the early 90’s that had something to do with Steve Albini. It’s just, well, I really like the name.
P.P.S. I stole some of these from Iamrob, squant, infernauta, mantid and regnad_kcin. Thanks guys!
