  • Pitchfork Friendly Band Names, Part Tres

Next time you want to out cool your one friend who brags about downloading the Gnarls Barkley album “months before it was released here in the U.S.”, try dropping any of these fake band names into a conversation:

    • The Iron-On Letters
    • Scotland Yard
    • Cancer Omega
    • Kerouac
    • Burst Into Flames

Oh, they’re good — but have you heard The Iron-On Letters? Fucking transcendent. I saw them open for Colin Meloy when he was doing his solo Morrissey acoustic thing a while back. I’m pretty sure they’ve got a MySpace.

I guarantee it’ll work almost every time… Well, at least until your friend Googles whatever band you name check and finds this post. *shrug*

    More: Part 1. Part 2.

  • My Twttr Ponies

Like any good internet beta whore, I just started using twttr. And while it’s pretty cool and rather promising, there are a few things that I really wish it had…

    1. For starters, a simple JavaScript based badge would be nice. While Flash is nice for some things, I really don’t think I need to load it to tell the world I’m having a beer or going on a walk. Also, it’d be nice if I didn’t have to recode my template to fit it in.
    2. RSS/Atom feeds wouldn’t hurt either. I know it’s supposed to be mobile phone based, but it really would be nice if I could give my feed out to folks instead of making them use twttr’s service to follow me around. Keeping track of my friends would be much less irritating too… ;)
    3. The ability to turn off “update sent” notices being sent to your phone. Yeah, I know I just sent an update. I appreciate that you want to let me know that my friends got my message and everything, but that’s really sort of unnecessary. Well, at least I think it is. *shrug*

I’m really not trying to be a curmudgeon, honest. I just think that this stuff would take twttr from being a novel application to something I actually use frequently.

    P.S. Like, OMG! Add me!
P.P.S. According to Jack — who happens to be the dude behind twttr — ponies #1 and #2 are already being worked on. Hooray!
P.P.P.S. What’s more, pony #3 is a non issue. Apparently the “update sent” message only gets sent to your phone on your first message. Sweet!

  • Good Weekend

I compelled to do a proper post about the weekend Sarah and I had — but everything I’ve written down doesn’t seem to do it justice. Instead, I’m just going to borrow from my gal’s playbook and do a stream of consciousness type list of some of my favorite memories from our weekend together…

    • Walking into A New Hue1 to find my girl rocking the red hair.
    • Bringing Sarah home to meet my folks.
    • Three Words: Raspberry almond cake.
    • Having beers at Rob and Lisey‘s place.
    • Heading back to my parent’s place for breakfast burritos.
    • Getting a nod and a thumbs up from my mom as we left my folks’ house.
    • Going to the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.
    • Jellies!
    • Being told, “You know, I’d really have no problem moving here to be with you.”
    • Snacking on appetizers at Mao’s.
    • Wading into the ocean barefoot at Venice Beach2 while holding hands.
    • Talking about marriage and kids with neither Sarah or I freaking out.
    • Distracting a pack of zombie seagulls with kettle corn to make a daring escape.
    • Fatburger!
    • Getting to play with a MacBook.
    • Being given a personal check for “services rendered”.

I’m sure that a lot of this makes no sense when it’s disembodied and taken out of the context of our weekend, but I sort of don’t care… It means a whole bunch to Sarah and I — and that’s really all that matters to me right now.

What can I say? That girl is my universe, yo.

    1. Warning: Comic Sans ahoy!
    2. I might have hepatitis now, but it was totally worth it for the moment we shared.

  • Top 5 T-Shirts Of 2005

I’m sure I should probably post these on Preshrunk, but it’s not back up just yet. *shrug* It will be soon enough…

    2. Wu Members
    3. Johnny Cash Is A Gangsta
    4. Goatse

  • Top 5 Comestibles Of 2005

    1. Henry’s Turkey on Wheat Roll
As far as I’m concerned the sandwiches from Wild Oats sister market Henry’s could kick the ass of Quiznos and Subway any day of the week.
    2. Naked Juice Blue Machine
This is the year I fell in love with Naked Juice. And while I love more flavors than I care to count, Blue Machine is by far the best one of the bunch.
    3. Honest Tea Vanilla Mint White Tea
Were it not for Matt I’d have never known about this brand of tea that sells their beverages “just a tad sweet”. Danke, Mr. Haughey.
    4. Have’A Corn Chips
A lot of people are curious when I tell them that Have’A Corn Chips aren’t actually salted but seasoned with soy sauce and lime juice. Then I let them try one. Shortly thereafter I have to fight them off so they don’t steal my bag.
    5. Swingers Jerk Chicken Omelet
Trust me, it’s as good as it sounds. I just wish they’d open a Swingers in OC so I didn’t have to drive out to Hollywood to get my fix.

What food and drink kept you running during 2005?

  • Pitchfork Friendly Band Names

    • Lorem Ipsum
    • Scooter Libby
    • You Guys Are No Fun Anymore
    • Sandy Duncan’s Eye
    • A Triumph Corollary
    • Mercy Killing At The Mall
    • Modern Danza
    • Self-Titled

P.S. Yes, I’m aware Sandy Duncan’s Eye was a band in the early 90’s that had something to do with Steve Albini. It’s just, well, I really like the name.
P.P.S. I stole some of these from Iamrob, squant, infernauta, mantid and regnad_kcin. Thanks guys!
